Review: Triggered Emotions Color Your Washi Tape

Afgelopen weekend was ik bij de Action in Heinenoord. Ik vind daar soms veel dingen die normaal niet in Ridderkerk te vinden zijn. En ja hoor dit was weer raak. Deze keer vond ik een variatie van tapes. Van Triggered Emotions is daar de Kraft Tape alsook Color Your Washi Tape. Over de laatste doe ik vandaag een review. Ook kocht ik van Demo Creations de Design Tape.

Last weekend, I shopped at the Action in Heinenoord. Sometimes I have luck finding items there which are not available in Ridderkerk. Yes, I was successful. This time I found a variety of tapes. From Triggered Emotions, I found Kraft Tape as well as Color Your Washi Tape. My review is about the last mentioned tape. I also I bought some Demo's Creations Design Tape.

De Color Your Washi Tape is 5mm in breedte en 5 m in lengte. Niet slecht voor € 0,79. Je krijgt er één rol washi tape per verpakking. Er zijn 6 motieven. Van veel details, geometrisch alsook grotere motieven.

The Color Your Washi Tape is 5mm wide and 5 m in length. Not bad for € 0,79. You get one role washi tape per pack. There are 6 designs. There are finer detailed, some bigger and geometric motifs.

Ik heb al mijn markers, pennen en potloden uit de kast gehaald om uit te testen op de tape. De tape heeft een soort van wasachtig oppervlak. Dus had ik mijn twijfels over zekere van de markers.

I have all kinds of markers, pens and pencils. I wanted to test them all on this washi tape. The surface of the tape is covered with wax. I had my doubts about the result of some of the markers.

Potlood/ Pencil

Omdat potloden soms het eerste is waar je aan denkt bij kleuren, moest ik al mijn potloden testen.

The first thing that comes to mind for coloring is usually coloring pencils. Therefor I used that for my first tests.

Cretacolor Karmina

Kleurpotlood kan wel. Deze potloden zijn best zacht. Ook is de was-inhoud minuscuul.

Coloring pencils are a good option and it works. These pencils are very soft and don't have such a waxy pigment.

Je moet wel je best doen tijdens het vermengen van de kleuren. De washi tape heeft al een raar oppervlak, en als het onderliggende papier maar een beetje structuur heeft, dan zie je dit gelijk op de washi tape.

The blending of color does take some effort. The surface of the washi tape and the paper underneath can cause a bit of trouble because it adds a lot of texture which is of influence on the result.

Caran d'Ache

Deze aquarelpotloden gebruik ik graag.

These pencils are a go to product and I use it often.

Omdat de potloden zacht zijn en veel pigment-inhoud heeft gaan de kleuren echt goed. Dat vond ik mooi en de vermenging van kleuren ging goed. Het probleem begon toen ik dit met de aquabrush ging activeren. Het water liet het pigment parels vormen (zie foto). Dit komt van de wasachtige oppervlak van de washi tape.

The softness of the pencils and the pigment quality makes coloring a breeze. I found that the coloring it self was a success. However, as soon as I activated the pigment with the water brush, all the pigment started to form droplets (see photo). This is the result of the waxy surface of the washi tape.

Stabilo Aquacolor

Ook deze aquarelpotloden zijn een favoriet van me.

These water color pencils are another favorite of mine.

Deze potloden zijn net als Caran d'Ache zacht met veel pigment. Kleuren en vermengen van kleur ging goed. Ook hier had ik de pareltjes toen ik het pigment activeerde met de aquabrush (zie foto).

Just like Caran d'Ache, these pencils are soft with quality pigment. Blending of colors was a success. Droplets also formed when I activated the pigment with the water brush (see photo).

Stiften en pennen op waterbasis/ Water base Markers and pens 

Waterbasis op de washi tape gaat niet. Je kunt op de close-up foto's zien wat ik bedoel. Ik heb hier zes varianten getest omdat zekere ervan een dye inkt, en andere een aquarel inkt hebben.

This washi tape does not work well with water base products. The results are visible on the close-op photos. I tested a variety of 6 markers, some with dye ink and others with water color pigment. 

Pergamano PergaColors

Deze stiften zijn gemaakt om op vellum te kleuren. Dus een soort van kunststof oppervlak. Daarom dacht ik dat ik hiermee een goed resultaat zou krijgen.

These markers was made especially for vellum, although it is paper it still has a nonporous surface. That is why I thought I might get a favorable result. 

Helaas is dit niet gelukt. Alleen kleuren geeft al parels en een oneven kleur. De aquabrush haalt gewoon de kleur weg en laat een druppel kleur achter.

Unfortunately the result is disappointing. The ink forms droplets and leaves an uneven result. By using the water brush you only take color away and leave droplets behind.

Staedtler Triplus Color

Deze stiften zijn ook op waterbasis maar dan met dye inkt.

These markers are water based dye ink.

Dye inkt werkt het best op aquarelpapier of gewoon papier. Dus je kunt wel raden wat er gebeurde. Ook hier kreeg ik parels en oneven kleur bij normaal kleuren. Ik heb dit niet eens met de aquabrush geprobeerd omdat ik dezelfde resultaten zou krijgen als bij PergaColors.

Dye ink works best on water color paper or normal paper. Guess what the result? Only droplets and uneven coloring.I didn't even try the water brush because the results will be the same as with PergaColors.

Stabilo Pen 68 

Ook deze pennen zijn op dye basis.

These pens are also water based dye ink. 

Hier kreeg ik ook hetzelfde resultaat als bij Staedtler Triplus Color.

I had the same results as with the Staedtler Triplus Color.

Caran d'Ache Fibralo

Deze pennen zijn op aquarelbasis.

These pens are water color pigment ink.

Ook hier kreeg ik hetzelfde effect als bij de vorige markers/ pennen op waterbasis.

The result with these pens are the same as the water base markers/ pens in the previous tests. 

Ecoline Brush Pens

Deze pennen zijn ook op aquarelbasis en gelijkwaardig aan Zig Real Color Brush Pens. Dus zal deze ook hetzelfde reageren.

These pens are also water color pigment base and is the equivalent of Zig Real Color Brush Pens. The results will be the same as the previous tests.

Bij gewoon kleuren maakte dit al parels. Met aquabrush nog veel meer.

Normal coloring only forms droplets and the same result with the water brush.

Edding Brush Pens

Deze pennen zijn ook op aquarelbasis.

These pens are also water color pigment based.

Ik kreeg oneven kleur en heb hier niet eens de aquabrush geprobeerd.
 

Uneven coloring and droplets of pigment, therefor I didn't test it with th aqua brush.

Stiften op alcoholbasis / Alcohol Markers

De inkt waarmee het motief is aangebracht op de washi tape, is niet bestemt voor alcohol markers.

The printed motifs are with a solvable ink, therefor alcohol ink will smear the image.

Deco Time Twin Markers

Ik wilde bewust een voorbeeld laten zien.

Though it is not advised I wanted to show you the result.

Zoals je op het voorbeeld ziet, laten de markers de zwarte inkt van de washi tape vlekken. Dus is dit geen optie voor op de washi tape.

The markers desolve the black ink and leaves smears behind. Not an option for this washi tape.

Pennen/ Pens

Zig Wink of Stella Brush pens

Ik dacht dat deze wel zouden werken, maar dit is helaas niet gelukt.

I thought that these pens would work, but the result is disappointing.

De kleur is oneven en veel parels.

Just like with the water base markers it leaves droplets of uneven color.

Zig Wink of Stella Pigment pens

Deze pennen hebben een pigment inkt basis met glitter.

These pens are filled with pigment ink with glitter.

Hoewel de kleur niet zo opvallend is, vind ik dit wel een geslaagde test. Beiden de goud en zilver gaat goed over de washi tape en parelt niet. Wel moet je je best doen om alle wit van het motief gevuld te krijgen. Dit werkt wel, maar mijn aanbeveling is om deze pennen te gebruiken voor kleine motieven.

Although the color is not so striking, I find this a successful test. Both the gold and silver sticks well on the washi tape and leave no droplets. You do need to do your best to get an all over coverage. Though the pens do work, my recommendation is to use these pens for smaller motifs.

Metallic Gel pens

Deze gel pennen zijn van de Action en dus goed voor je portemonnee.

Gel pens from the Action are a cheap option.

Wat was ik zeer verrast! Deze pennen kleuren echt het beste van alle tests. De kleur komt waardig over en dit laat ook nog een glans achter. Deze kan ik echt aanbevelen om te gebruiken bij het kleuren van deze washi tape.

I was pleasantly surprised! Of all the tests, these pens gives the best coverage. The color is true and also leaves a sparkle behind. I can really recommend these pens to colors this washi tape.

Waterbasis krijten/ Water base pigment sticks

Krijten op waterbasis werkt ook goed.

Water base pigment sticks work very good.

Creall Silky 3-in-1

Deze krijten zijn bijna dezelfde als Gelatos.

These pigments sticks are an cheaper alternative for Gelatos.

De pigment bracht ik aan met een verdoezelaar. De kleur blijven zitten, maar is dan wel nog te activeren met water of vocht. Dus beveel ik aan een kleurloze beschermlaag erover te doen zoals Glossy Accents van Ranger, haarlak of embosingpoeder.

I used a paper stub to color the image. The color stays put, but it will always activate with water or moisture. I recommend to protect the coloring with a clear protective layer like Glossy Accents by Ranger, hair spray or embosssing powder.

Daar heb je dit. Mijn bevinding is dat niet alle pennen en potloden gaan werken bij het kleuren van deze washi tape. Dus aan jou de keus of je dit wilt kopen of niet. Als het niet je ding is om te kleuren met pennen, dan kan je dit wellicht nog met embossingpoeder bewerken. Heb je deze al aangekocht en met ander producten of stiften bewerkt? Laat het me dan weten, want ik ben erg benieuwd of er andere merken zijn die wel gaan werken.

My finding is that not all pens and pencils will work with this washi tape. So the choice is yours whether you want to buy it or not. If coloring with pens is not your thing, you could try embossing powder to add color or effect to the motifs. Do you already own this washi tape and tried other products or pens?
