Review: EK Tools Cordless Engraving Tool

Nou dit is bijna 2019. Bizar gewoon, hoe snel de tijd gegaan is... Ik wens jullie alvast een mooi en gezond nieuwjaar. 

Voor afsluiting van 2018 heb ik voor jullie een review van de Cordless Engraving Tool van EK Tools.

Almost 2019. I am still amazed how fast this year passed. My wish for you in the new year is a year of good health and lots of creative beauty.

For my last blog post of 2018 I opted for a review of the Cordless Engraving Tool by EK Tools.

Deze tool is één van de tools waarmee ik het meest pret mee gehad heb om dit uit te testen. Ik wou dit echt op alles uitproberen om ermee te schrijven of zelfs schetsjes te maken.

From all the reviews of 2018 , this tool is by far one of the most enjoyable products I have tested. I tested it on a lot of materials and was glad that you could do designs in both text and illustrations.

=== Algemene beschrijving / General description ===

Op de voorzijde van het pakket is een melding dat de tool op batterijen werkt en dat die niet meegeleverd worden. Aan de achterzijde en de zijkant is meer informatie en gebruiksaanwijzingen in het Engels. Een korte samenvatting/ The front of the package mentions that the tool works with batteries and that it is not included. On the backside and side is more information and instructions. A short summary:

• Graveert op glas, metaal, hout, steen, keramiek, acryl, leer, plastic en meer/ Engrave on glass, metal, wood, stone, ceramic, acrylic, leather, plastic and more.
• Schuifbare aan/ uit knop/ Slotted on-off button. 
• Gebruik lichte druk op het werkoppervlak/ Apply light pressure on the surface. 

De tool zelf is van plastic. De punt is van metaal met een “diamond head”. De punt kan verwijdert worden. Wat me laat denken is dat je ook andere punten erin kunt gebruiken. Maar dit zeg ik onder voorbehoud.

The body of the tool is made from plastic. The nib is metal with a diamond head. The tip is removable which gives the idea that you could use other tips with this tool. But I say that with caution as I have not yet tested it.

De tool ligt prettig in de hand en er zijn twee rubber stukjes aangebracht om hem stevig vast te houden.

The tool is supplied with rubber, where your fingers will rest, for extra grip. 

De aan/uit knop werkt met een schuifbare knop.

The on-off button is slotted and move to on or off. 

Je hebt 4 AAA batterijen nodig en deze komen niet meegeleverd. Op de verpakking is een vermelding dat je niet verschillende merken of types batterijen moet gebruiken want dit kan nadelig zijn voor de tool. Ook moet je de polen schoonmaken wanneer je de batterijen er uithaalt.

Not included in the package are the batteries. You will need 4 AAA batteries. The package gives a warning not to mix different types of batteries because it could damage the tool. You also need to clean all poles of the battery unit when you remove the batteries after use.

De tool geeft een vibratie tijdens de aan stand. Ook een licht bromgeluid tijdens gebruik.

The tool vibrates when on and you hear a light sound while engraving.

De punt is scherp genoeg om te graveren maar veilig genoeg mocht je er met je vinger tegenaan komen.

The tip is sharp enough to engrave with but it will not cut your fingers.

Zo ziet de graveer tool eruit. De ombouw van de tool is van plastic met een metalen punt die in het rond draait. Met de aan/uit knop hoef je niet heel de tijd een knopje in te drukken. Dit maakt dat je al je aandacht op het schrijven kunt concentreren. Er is ook ergonomisch rubber aangebracht waar je de tool vasthoud. De tool ligt gemakkelijk in de hand. 

This is what the tool looks like. the body is made of plastic. The metal tip works with a fast rotating motion. The on-off button is slotted. By pushing the button to the on setting, it will stay on, which let you concentrate on the design. The ergonomically placed rubbers on the side makes the tool easy to control.

Mijn eerste test was op glas. Om dit makkelijker te zien heb ik zwart karton achter het glas geplakt.

My first test was on glass. For better view I added black card stock for contrast.

Voor de bloem heb ik een stansje op het glas geplakt en de buitenrand eerst met de tool gegraveerd. Vervolgens heb ik de details uit de losse pols aangebracht. Op het glas vond ik de tool goed werken. Je kunt de lijnen goed breder maken, stipjes en ook schaduw aanbrengen. Ook het schrijven ging goed. 

With a die I cut out a flower to use as a template. I first engraved the outside perimeter. All details was done freestyle. I found this tool extremely easy to use on glass. It didn't slip around. Lines can be thickened. You can add shadow and details with stippling motions. Even writing goes smoothly.  

Voor metaal heb ik mijn liniaal van de Fuse tool gemarkeerd. Omdat sommige mensen me nu Hobby Altie noemen heb ik dit zo ook op mijn liniaal geschreven... hihihi. Op metaal werkt dit net zoals een Dremel tool. Niet iedereen weet dit, maar omdat ik zelf al in de metaal heb gewerkt, weet ik dat de kniprichting van metaal invloed heeft op wat je ermee kunt. Dit is ook van invloed op de punt van de tool. Maar je kunt eerst op een afval stukje van het metaal oefenen om te kijken hoe je de tool het best kunt gebruiken. Dus, op metaal gaat dit een stukje moeilijker dan op glas.

For the test on metal I decided to mark my Fuse Tool ruler. Some people call me Hobby Altie, so I decided to use that name for the ruler hahaha. Metal works a little bit different than glass. The tool acts the same as a Dremel tool. Not everyone knows it but I used to work in the metal industry, and by experience I know that the cut direction of the metal will have influence on the design. A suggestion is to test the tip on a scrap piece of metal first to get the feel of it and see how the tip reacts to the surface.

Verder wou ik kijken hoe de tool op hout zou werken. Ik had helaas alleen een stukje hardboard. Dus dit dan maar uitproberen. Eerst heb ik met een lichte grijs kleurige inkt een boom gestempeld. Vervolgens heb ik dit met de tool bewerkt. De stam heb ik met strepen aangebracht en de bladen met stipjes. Om dit meer zichtbaar te maken heb ik dit weer met een groene inkt bewerkt. Hier werkt de tool echt goed. Je kunt een 3D debossed effect creëren. Je krijgt namelijk goed diepte in het materiaal. 

The next test was on hard board. I didn't have any wood to use for this test but it works almost the same. Wood has grain but hard board has different pieces pressed together. I stamped the tree with a light grey ink, engraved the trunk with longer strokes, and the leaves was done with the stippling technique. I added some ink afterwards to make it more visible for the photo.

Ik wou ook kijken op of de tool zou werken op Acryl/ Plexiglas. Dit kan wel. Alleen moet je hier goed erop letten dat je een constante druk toepast. Op plexiglas werkt dit dezelfde als op het hardboard. Voor een mooie creatie zou ik iets doen wat je niet nodig hebt om meerdere malen op dezelfde plek te graveren. Dit zie je zo met de tekst op mijn pennenhouder. 

Next up is plexi glass/ plastic. Plexi glass is soft, therefor you have to use a constant pressure on the surface. You could get thicker lines but if your pressure differs then you will get a scratchy end product. An example can be seen in the following photo.

Op gekleurde aluminiumfolie kan je de tool ook gebruiken. Deze is bij verre het makkelijkst. Toch moet je erop letten dat je niet al te hard drukt met de tool. Dit zie je bij de overgang van de D naar de I en ook bij de E. 

Colored aluminum foil can give you a very nice debossed design. The tip will take away the color but also indent the foil. But do take care with the pressure. Pressing to hard can result in folds that is not easy to repair. This can be seen between the D & I and also the bottom of the E.

Glossy cardstock met motieven kan ook bewerkt worden met de tool. Hier heb ik een houten achtergrond gebruikt. Maar omdat glossy cardstock een soort van plastic op de oppervlakte heeft, moet je er goed op letten dat je niet uitglijd met de punt.

Glossy card stock can be used too. I used a wooden background and added a "carved heart" effect. But do take in mind that the surface of glossy cardstock is plastic and can be slippery.

Met vellum heb ik mogelijk een nieuwe manier gekregen om sneller te embossen. Hier heb ik dit uit de losse pols gedaan, en ook spiegelbeeld geschreven. Dus niet mijn mooiste handschrift... hihihi Maar als je embossmallen hebt denk ik dat je snel klaar bent door de motieven na te trekken.

For the next text I used vellum to see if you can emboss with the tool. I wrote my name in mirror image and also drew a flower. I did this freestyle so it is not my best handwriting. I think you will have better luck with a stencil. 

De volgende twee creaties zijn ook te zien in mijn filmpje. Het eerste voorbeeld is gedaan met een stencil en vellum. Dit gaat wel gemakkelijk maar je moet er op letten dat de pen niet al te hard op de vellum komt te liggen anders kan de vellum scheuren.

The next two examples is also captured in the video. The first example was done with a metal stencil and vellum. It is best to use a stencil with small detail lines. If the tip can pass through the lines chances are that you will rip the vellum. 

Op glitterpapier kan je ook de glitter weghalen door een stencil, door een tekst erbij te schrijven voor een alternatieve manier om glitterpapier te gebruiken.

The next example is on glitter paper. The tip will remove glitter. I used a stencil with bigger openings and free styled some text. This gives an alternative way to use glitter paper.

=== Mijn bevindingen/ My conclusion ===

Belangrijkste voor mij was of je deze tool zal kunnen gebruiken als je reuma hebt. Normaal kan ik niet zo goed tegen vibratie. Maar al deze tests heb ik gedaan zonder dat ik enige last had van mijn hand.

The most important issue I wanted to test is the results of the vibration on my hand. Sometimes vibrations doesn't work to well with rheumatic ailments. But I have to say I didn't have any problems with a cramping hand or joints. 

De tool zelf voelt goed aan in de hand. De pen doet als het ware zelf het werk. Je hoeft er geen extra druk op toe te passen. De punt moet alleen contact maken met de oppervlakte van de materiaal waar je mee werkt.

The ergonomically design of the tool makes it a joy to work with. You do not need to use excessive pressure and the tool does all the work. The tip only needs to rest on the surface of the material. 

De punt is niet scherp en dus kan dit ook over de vinger heen zonder dat je gesneden wordt. Maar enige voorzorgsmaatregelen zijn wel nodig. Bij meeste van de materialen waar je mee werkt komt een stof vrij. Werkt dus in een goed geventileerde ruimte of doe een mondkapje op. Werk je met glas zal ik wel aanbevelen om een veiligheidsbril op te doen. Je weet nooit hoe de samenstelling van het glas is en of dit gaat barsten of gaat splinteren. Dat wil je natuurlijk niet in je ogen.

The tip is not sharp enough to cut your fingers. But there are some safety measures to follow. Most of the surfaces will have dust as result. Work in a well ventilated area or use a dust mask. When working with glass it is preferable to use protective eye gear. You never know if the glass can shatter or if little pieces of glass chips off into the air.

De tool wordt na een tijdje warm. Dus zal ik dit even laten rusten. Ga een bakje koffie pakken en dan is de tool weer afgekoeld.

As with any motorized tool, it could warm up after using the tool for a while. If this happens, let it cool for a bit while you get yourself a cup of coffee. By this time it will be cooled down again.

Het enige minpuntje wat ik heb is dat ik wens dat deze tool met een oplaadbare batterij komt. Zelf vind ik iets met een snoer niet handig en batterijen zijn duur. Nou moet ik zeggen dat ik al de tests hierboven gedaan heb met één stel batterijen. Het glas, glitterpapier en de vellum namen veel tijd in beslag en de batterijen zijn nog niet leeg. Dus kan je een eind komen met 4 van die batterijtjes.

The only negative I can find with this tool is that I would prefer a tool that comes with a chargeable battery system. Batteries are expensive. But that said I did do all the tests above one after the other. Most time was spent on the glass, vellum and glitter paper and the batteries was still strong. So you can get far with 4 of these batteries. 

Ik kan de Cordless Engraving tool wel aanbevelen. Ik ben er zeer tevreden mee. Maar mijn aanbeveling is dat je dit alleen aankoopt als je inderdaad ermee gaat werken.

I can definitely say I am very glad I bought this tool. It gets a thumbs up from me and can give my stamp of approval.  But that said, I would suggest that if this is a tool that you will only use for one time, to refrain from buying it. It is not a niche product but a product that years to be used.
